How A Book is Born

A behind-the-scenes tour of children’s books with author/publisher Jeanne Gehret, using her picture books as examples. Travel the entire publishing journey with her from the initial idea to the written story, text revisions, illustrations, press proofs, and printed copies. Students love to see the photos of people and places that inspired and hear how these images wove themselves into her stories.

Enjoy Many Levels of Meaning in Each Presentation

  • Language arts presentation with a seasoned author
  • Strong message about the value of each person, no matter what his or her abilities, gender, or race.
  • One author’s path to publishing, which demonstrates the universal value of revising a work until you get it right

As the author of four children’s books on ADD and learning disabilities, Ms. Gehret is a former teacher, parent of a child with learning disabilities, and speaker for schools and parent groups nationwide. Determined to get her message out to an audience neglected by major publishers, she founded Verbal Images Press in 1990. She has done hundreds of classroom presentations in the U.S. as well as in-service writing workshops for teachers.

What They’re Saying About “How a Book is Born”

“Thanks so much for coming in today. The kids and I really enjoyed it. It was really interesting to watch Louis — he does not always pay attention when books are read aloud, but he was so engaged in your presentation. He talked about it with me several times today.” — Sylvene Goggin, 4th grade teacher

Jeanne Gehret and her book Eagle Eyes held the attention of our children’s library club—even though it was the dinner hour! Her visuals were engaging and her delivery that of a master teacher.”— Robin Benoit, Children’s Librarian

History-Oriented Visits

with Jeanne Gehret

Nineteenth-century American history and language arts come alive for students who experience a school visit based on Jeanne Gehret’s biography of Susan B. Anthony. Ms. Gehret welcomes the opportunity to tailor presentations to your students and your curriculum. For Women’s History Month (March), choose an inspirational speech about Ms.Anthony, her work, or her travels. For language arts, Ms. Gehret will work with your students on writing biographies of selected individuals.

Here are a few popular options for school visits. Any can be geared for your students in grades K-6:

  • · The Publishing Work of Susan B. Anthony
  • · Bedbugs and Mobs: Travels of Susan B. Anthony
  • · Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass in Rochester
  • · The Legacy of Susan B. Anthony in Rochester
  • · Writing Biography (3 sessions)

Through painstaking research of primary sources such as diaries, letters, newspaper clippings, and Ms. Anthony’s own authorized biography, Ms. Gehret gives rare insights into the famous woman. While writing this book, she served as a tour guide of Ms. Anthony’s homestead in Rochester, NY, traveled to many of the places that Anthony frequented, and included in her book some stories that have never been documented before.
